Teething Troubles? 6 ways to ease the pain.

Teething can be torture (EEK) or a total breeze. My first was a horrible teether, and my second wasn’t so bad… we will see what baby number 3’s future holds!

My sis-in-law is a first time momma and her sweet angel is having a rough go at it, so when she asked for a little advice it reminded me of all my lived-and-learned expertise that I’ve gathered over the years.

A wise momma once said to me the reason we teeth when we’re babies is so that we don’t remember it. Ha! And boy is that a good thing!

Teething is just something you’ll have to get through together—you and your baby. Prepare to spend lots of time cuddling and comforting! But when your baby needs a little something more, one or all of these six tips may just do the trick!

Here are my 6 remedies to ease teething troubles.

I like to start out more natural, and move my way up as needed! And I’ll order my list as such. Every baby is so different! With some babies, you may not even know they’re teething—I wasn’t that lucky…

  1. Something cold to chew on!

One thing that may help your teething baby is to let them chew. Try wetting a washcloth and freezing it and letting your baby chew on it. Or there are some awesome baby teethers, some that you can freeze, and others that are good to chew on.

  1. Amber Teething Necklace

I totally didn’t buy into amber teething necklaces with my first—I thought it was a bunch of hocus pocus! However, I used one with my son two years later and he was a mild teether… and I attribute that to the teething necklace. The amber contains succinic acid and when it’s absorbed provides healing properties—particularly anti-inflammatory to help those swollen gums and a calming effect to help with the discomfort. Pretty cool stuff! You can score one for less than $20 on amazon and have it delivered to your door! With all the drooling and sleepless nights—amazon is a lifesaver—and an amber teething necklace just might be too. Just be sure you supervize your little lamb when they’re wearing their necklace.

  1. Essential oils

I love essential oils! I use them for so many things. For teething here’s a tried and true recipe that will ease the discomfort that comes from teething. Take a 10 ML roller ball and start with 2 drops each of lavender and roman chamomile and top with fractionated coconut oil. Then simply roll along the jawline and on the bottom of their little feet. (I use doterra oils and trust using them on my babies.)

  1. Gripe Water

I hope you’ve heard of gripe water—it’s homeopathic and can help with tummy issues. Remember, when your baby is teething, they’re producing a lot of drool, which can make them nauseous and gassy. Mommies talk about gripe water like it’s a super amazing secret! And, this stuff is like magic, seriously! If all else fails for a whiny baby, bust out the gripe water.

  1. Tylenol

When I was a new mom, I felt so BAD for giving my baby medicine. Not sure why this is, but for some reason it felt weird to give my tiny baby Tylenol. Then a wise woman said to me, “If you have a really bad headache, do you take medicine to feel better?” And that was all it took for me to understand the need for Tylenol at times. If your baby is having a hard-teething day, reach for it, and stay consistent. The hard part about Tylenol is waiting for it to start working! So, once it is, I recommend you set a timer for when you can next give it. If it wears off completely, your baby will be in a lot of uncomfortable pain again while you both wait for it to get back into their system.

Ibuprofen works better in my opinion, and lasts longer, but you can’t use it until your baby is six months old.

  1. Teething Gel

This stuff numbs your baby’s gums—I’ve tried it myself and does the trick isntantly, which is wonderful when your baby is suffering. I’ve heard some people say that the gel hardens the gums, but I’m not sure of the validity of that. I just know that this stuff works FAST!

I sure hope these remedies help provide some relief for your baby—and you! At the end of the day, you’re the momma, so you’ll have to decide what is best for your baby. I am not a doctor, I am a mom—sharing my experiences in hopes of helping you out!
