I did something earth shattering last week—I went to the the grocery store without a list!
For some of you, maybe you never make a list. But for me, that’s what I do! I’ve read so many articles about how it’s best to make meal plans and grocery lists to save money, and to simplify things, so it’s something I guess I thought I was suppose to do.
But now, well, I think it’s bogus. At least for me… and here’s why!
When I make a meal plan, somehow, I make every meal over the top! My grocery lists were ginormous and it took me a long time to make the list. Then, because the lists were so long, grocery shopping felt like it took forever!
Last night I went grocery shopping for the second week in a row, with no list! I got my staples—bread, milk, eggs—then some breakfast items and then off to produce. Picked out a vegetable for 6 meals and then picked out some fruit. I chose what looked good and on sale, and the whole experience was a beautiful thing. I quickly picked a main item for each meal and I was done. I felt bad for all the other shoppers in the store looking frustrated at their list and back up again, when I felt so free!
And, on top of it all, I was in and out of the store in 20 minutes—it helped that I walked right up at the checkout line with no wait—but still! And get this, I spent less money than I typically would too. Since I wasn’t making elaborate meal plans with too many sides, my ingredients were simple. MIND BLOWN! Seriously I couldn’t believe what I had experienced!
And not one person in my family complained that I wasn’t spending about 45 minutes making dinner and the same amount at least cleaning up. Imagine that. Another bonus to easy meals—easier cleanup! And my family loved everything I made.
I found a way to simplify something that I had inadvertently overcomplicated. So now I’m cheering, say no to meal plans!
Of course, if I’m going to have a party of some sort, I’ll need to make a list. But for my normal weeks—this is my new way to shop!
Is there something in your life that you’re overcomplicating? Maybe it’s groceries like me, or maybe it’s something else. Try to simplify! I’d love to hear.
XO,
Kyra
