Sometimes Mommas have to break the rules.
My daughter had a tummy bug for a few days. It’s been rough. I wish I could take her pain away when she’s sick. She’s feeling better, and I’m oh so glad!
Well tonight at midnight she snuck into my room. I’m already asleep and hear her sweet voice whisper, “Momma… Momma.”
“Yes sweetheart.” I reply while half asleep.
“I’m sooo hungry!”
In that moment I had a choice. And I am so grateful that I chose YES in that moment.
We snuck quietly out of my room so we don’t wake daddy and I told her to get into bed and I’d be right there.
Now, we have a rule, to not get out of bed at night… unless you need to go potty or you REALLY need Mommy or Daddy. But, as a mom, I know the best rule of all, is that sometimes you need to break the rules.
I went into the kitchen poured her some cereal and milk, grabbed a spoon, then headed to my sweet daughters room. When I got into her room, her face lit up.
I kept the light off, but could see her face by the light of her star night light.
I watched how her hair fell across her face. I noticed the way she gripped her spoon and wondered when she had gotten so good at that. I saw the way her little mouth took bites and chewed.
I just watched her.
It was silent all except the crunching of her cereal.
There were no distractions, no other noises. No phones. No TV. Nothing else but her and me.
She finished her cereal and thanked me with a tired voice.
I tucked her back in and thanked God that she was my daughter, and that God chose me to be her Momma. I sung her the song I’ve been singing her to sleep with since she was born, you are my sunshine.
And that she is.
Mommas, sometimes the best rule, is to break a rule and take in a moment. Wishing you all beautiful, simple, rule-breaking moments.
XO,
Kyra
My nanny always sang that song to us grandkids. Too sweet!
